How To Adjust Garage Door Spring: Simple DIY Steps

how to adjust garage door spring in torquemaster,Torison and Side Mounted Extension garage door

Do you need the expertise to adjust the garage door spring? Is it dangerous to adjust the garage door springs? Honestly, if you don’t have any technical skills then this may be very difficult and dangerous for you.

According to the report of the US Consumer Safety Department, garage doors are responsible for heaving 10 to 20k+ accidents while repairing and operating the garage door.

So what are you thinking?

Need to call a professional. Yes, it may be, but if you have a little bit of experience in handling the mechanical stuff and use every safety measure. Then you are ready to do this by yourself.

With the help of a professional, I have prepared this guide that tells you how to adjust the garage door spring safely and effectively. And I have covered almost every spring that you can fix.

So are you ready?

If yes, then I have explained how to adjust the torquemaster, Torison and Side Mounted Extension garage door spring.

Note: This whole information that I am going to provide is based on my 7 feet tall and 9 feet wide and 150-pound roller up garage door.

But your garage door may be a little bit different from mine. That’s why the measurements also should change according to your garage door.

1. Adjust Torquemaster Garage Door Spring

Make sure while working on the torquemaster garage door spring, first you need to identify that it can be adjustable or you need to replace it.

In most cases, I have found that it is always broken. So it always is replaced. That’s why I am going to cover how to adjust it and how you can replace the torquemaster garage door spring.

Adjusting: So if you find that the torquemaster spring is not broken then you need to adjust the tension of it. But do you know how to do that?

This is very simple: you need to check if your garage door is harder to go up and bottom or it is too quickly going up and bottom. This will help you determine whether you need to tighten or lose the spring.

So when you figure out this then you will notice a gauge beside the torquemaster spring. This adjusts the torque of the spring and its screw holds all the tension of the torquemaster spring.

So if you find your garage door is harder to go up and down then you need to lose it by moving the screw anticlockwise. Or if too quickly then clockwise.

Note: You need to make sure the correct amount of tension you need to put on the spring. Otherwise, it may be dangerous for you. I am going to give a chart that you can follow while putting the tension on the spring.

Winding Spring Turns Chart
Door HeightSpring Turns
6′-0″14
6′-3″14-1/2
6′-5″15

6′-8″15-1/2

7′-0″16
7′-3″16-1/2
7′-6″17
7′-9″17-1/2
8′-0″18

Replacement: This much harder and difficult work than the adjustment.

And you need more tools and better instructions so I’m going to add a video that tells you the step-by-step process to perfectly replace the torquemaster spring in your garage door. So you can understand much better.

2. Adjust Torsion Spring Garage Door

Is your garage door 10ft wide? if yes, then you are pretty familiar with the torsion cables.

Because these springs are usually used in the above 10 ft wide garage doors. These springs are mounted on the top of the garage door and winded in a metal shaft. That helps the door to easily go up and down.

So if you find that this spring got loose or a little bit tight then you need to adjust its tension. But be careful because this is very dangerous work.

If you don’t have any knowledge of a garage door mechanism then I do not recommend you to do this by yourself.

But if you know then whether you need to increase or decrease the tension on your garage door you need to identify it first.

If you feel difficulty while opening or closing your garage door then you need to decrease the tension. Or if your garage door is open or close too quickly then you need to increase the tension.

But do you know how you can do this? Which tools are required? What is the step-by-step process?

So I am going to provide a step-by-step process so that you can understand it properly.

Are you ready? Then let’s go.

#1. Unplug The Garage Door Opener

So first close the garage door and then unplug the opener, this will confirm your security. Then you need to follow some security measurements such as:

  • If you are not confident to deal with torsion springs then call a professional.
  • Sufficient lighting is required in the garage so that you can work properly.
  • You need a helper.
  • All the necessary tools should be under the garage.

Now you are ready to do that. So let’s jump on to the main steps.

#2. Place the C-Clamp

Now, this is another safe and very important step. While you work on the tension of your garage door you need to place the c-clamp on the tracks. This will help you to lock the garage door.

This will prevent the garage door from opening and closing.

#3. Locate And Loosen The Screw-In Torsion Spring

When you carefully follow the torsion spring then you will notice a winding cone where it ends. This cone helps the torsion spring to keep in place.

Then you will also find 2 screws in the winding cone that are used to lock the torsion spring in place.

So if you want to adjust the torsion spring then you need to loosen those screws from your fingertips. Make sure to lock the bar with a vice grip this will help you to lock the shaft.

#4. Adjust The Torsion Spring

After losing those screws now you are ready to adjust the torsion spring garage door. Use 2 steel bars and put them into the holes of the winding cone. Make sure these bars are fully inserted in the holes.

Then you need to rotate the winding cone according to your need. I mean if the garage door opens and closes too quickly then you need to increase the tension.

How can you do that?

Just insert the bars in the holes then rotate them clockwise until you find the best lock.

And if you feel difficulty while opening and closing the garage door then you need to decrease the tension of the torsion spring. This is the same process but the difference is you need to rotate the bars anticlockwise.

Make sure to do that carefully. And after getting the right pitch now tighten the screws. Don’t forget to lubricate the spring.

3. Adjust The Side Mounted Extension Springs

If you find that the problem is in the side-mounted extension spring, not the torsion spring. Then you need the tension of it. But how can you do that?

What things should matter in the process? Now, I am going to give a step-by-step process on how you can adjust the side-mounted spring.

Are you interested in it? If yes then start the tour.

#1. Open And Disconnect The Garage Door

Before doing anything in the extension spring, first, you need to open the garage door fully so that you can release the tension of it.

Then disconnect the garage door opener with the garage door by pulling back the emergency cord. This will help you to make it secure.

#2. Place C-Clamp

If you don’t want any accidents while working on the extension spring. Then you need to make it more secure for you. So it will not make anything wrong.

For doing this you need to use a c-clamp and place it onto the tracks to make a tough lock.

#3. Detach The Spring Hook

If you lock above the extension spring you will find a track hanger that attaches with the spring hook. This will help you to keep the spring in place.

So for adjusting the extension spring, you need to remove it from the hanger tracks.

You can use a wrench to detach it from both sides. Yes, both sides, this is very important for keeping the door balanced.

#4. Adjust The Tension Of The Extension Spring

Now, according to your need, you need to move the hooks in the holes. Although you have more options to move the hook in the given holes.

But I recommend moving only one hole at once. Because this will help you balance your garage door. But do you know when you should do that?

Don’t worry let me clarify.

If the garage door is difficult to close I mean it is too quickly, then you need to decrease the tension. By placing the hook in the lower hole.

Or if you find the garage door is harder to close and open, it means you need to increase the tension. By moving the hook in the higher hole.

Make sure to place them equal holes on both sides otherwise your garage door won’t close evenly.

#5. Test The Garage Door

Now, remove the c-clamp and test your door is balanced. Is it close and open perfectly? If you feel any problem then you can repeat the steps.

And continuously follow until you find the best pitch. This will make everything better.

Now, I have explained everything about all the adjustments to the garage door springs. You can follow all these steps and you find better results.
